Guatemala is truly one of the gems of Central America. This nation of 13 million is home to many attractions that are sure to enthrall prospective tourists. Though Guatemala has been plagued by instability and poverty, the nation has made significant progress and is now home to a booming tourist industry. Guatemala has a diverse range of attractions that will captivate a wide range of visitors.

Historical Attractions in Guatemala

Guatemala is a nation with a rich heritage. The country was home to the heart of Mayan civilization and one can visit many of the landmarks this impressive society left behind. Tourists can visit awe-inspiring Mayan structures at Tikal in the Peten Region, including the iconic Jaguar Temple. A good jumping-off point for Tikal is the island-city of Flores. One can also visit the extensive ruins of a Mayan settlement at El Mirador, also in Peten.

Guatemala is also home to a wide array for museums, especially in Guatemala City. One can see an extensive collection of Guatemalan flora and fauna at the Guatemalan National Natural History Museum, located in the capital. One can also get a taste of the modern history of Guatemala at the National History Museum. Guatemala City is also home to museums of trains, modern art, and archeology.

Outdoor Attractions in Guatemala

Guatemala is a nation of great natural beauty. The country is filled with gorgeous rivers, lakes, volcanoes, and rainforests. Many of Guatemala’s natural wonders are protected by national parks and wildlife refuges. This incredibly bio-diverse nation is increasingly recognized as a center of environmentally-friendly “ecotourism”.

There are several means of experiencing Guatemala’s natural splendor, including everything from hiking to kayaking. Hiking tours are available at some of the nation’s 37 volcanoes. There are many trails throughout the country that are open to mountain biking as well. For those who would like to travel on the water, Guatemala has flat-water kayaking and whitewater rafting.
